A Seoul National University (SNU) professor specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) technology was appointed to lead LG Energy Solution's (LGES) advisory council on AI, according to the company, Monday.

The electric vehicle battery manufacturing unit of LG Group said that SNU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Yoon Sung-roh will direct the council's big data and AI division, helping the company establish strategies for data governance and the AI-based big data platform.

SNU Department of Computer Science and Engineering professor Chun Byung-gon, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology Graduate School of AI professor Shin Jin-woo, SNU Department of Mechanical Engineering professor Park Chong-woo and SNU School of Chemical and Biological Engineering professor Lee Jong-min joined the council as committee members.

"The secondary battery business is regarded as Korea's next growth engine following the semiconductor business, so AI and data-based digital innovation is necessary at this moment for the battery business to make a leap forward," Yoon said.

The newly formed council will set visions and business directions to enhance LGES' digital transformation, as well as build the technological partnerships required to realize these ambitions.

Each advisory member will oversee the selection and execution of strategic assignments within their respective area of expertise. They will also participate in determining key technological tasks utilizing AI, particularly in executing AI tasks for establishing smart factories, as well as fostering the next-generation of AI professionals.

"LG Energy Solution is consistently executing several projects for digital innovation that maximizes both the efficiency and precision of its manufacturing processes," LGES CEO Kwon Young-soo said. "With the advisory council, we will expedite the promotion of manufacturing intelligence, as well as the establishment of smart factories."
